Kidspiration

Thanks to our classmate Rachel for introducing us to Kidspiration! I have attached a video as an overview. I see value in this software. It is my understanding that Kidspiration is on all elementary school computers in Nova Scotia. This is a situation where the vast number of things teachers need to do, makes me think that many teachers may not even be aware that it is on their computers let a lone use it. Technology learning for children can be as simple as providing them with opportunities to be in front of the computers on software such as this. Although it would be nice if the teacher were the expert, it is not a good excuse for not providing students with time and opportunity to learn about technology, either separately or inclusive of classroom learning units. Give the "gift of time". The students will figure it out and before you know it, you will learn it too - that is if you do not already know it and use it!

Class Reflection #3

Class # 3 was great. We got to spend time "playing" with Kurzweil. What a terrific way to learn! I would have never learned as much as I did without this opportunity and much needed time. I not only learned about this software but was engaged in learning in such a way that it reminded me of how we as educators are limited by time in our own professional growth and how we, due to time constraints, rush our own students in their learning thus impede the possible growth - just touching on things and rarely enough hands on time.

With Kurweil, I did do the tutorials prior to class and it was helpful but actually creating a unit that a child that we know will be using, allowed me to see how the MPTT (Milieu, Personality, Technology & Task) plays a significant role in what is created. This is individualized indeed and has so much opportunity for inclusion in the classroom unit of learning. I am so impressed with Kurzweil!

Class # 2 Reflection

Wow. I am so fortunate to be in this class. Excited, you bet! I have heard about Kurzweil but never had the good fortune of seeing it. I can only imagine that the excitement that I felt today learning about this software and playing with it as that of someone who saw snow or the wide open ocean for the very first time! I know it may sound extreme but that's how excited I was - the opportunities this presents for those having reading and writing difficulties is absolutely unbelievable. Why haven't I been exposed to this prior to today? That's sad. There are far too many students without access to this tool. There are far too many teachers, adminsitrators and parents/guardians that don't even know about this. It can significantly change the lives of unlimited numbers of learners. I envision myself standing on my roof top and shouting out what I learned today - well, not really but I will be sure to spread the word and make use of my 30 day trial.
